Chapter Fourteen – Sarah

Sarah stared at Cormac as her world tilted on its axis as the shock of his offer settled in. The sunlight filtered through the store window and cast a golden halo around his broad shoulders, making him appear like some kind of guardian angel. His dark eyes held a sincerity that made her want to trust him.

Well, she needed to trust him. What alternative did she have?

The bank had failed her, refusing to honor their agreement and leaving her on the verge of losing a vital shipment of craft supplies. It was an unexpected blow that had left her reeling.

She had been meticulous in her planning. Just two days ago, Sarah had called the bank to double-check their agreement for an overdraft to cover the last of her stock for her craft store. She had been certain that everything was in order and that the shipment from the craft supplier would arrive today, as planned. However, when she received the call from the supplier earlier, her heart dropped into her stomach. There had been a mix-up, and the bank wouldn’t be able to rectify the matter for at least twenty-four hours—twenty-four hours too late.

“Are you sure about this?” Sarah asked, her voice trembling under the weight of her disbelief. Her hands fidgeted with the edge of her paint-splattered apron as she tried to process the reality of what was happening.

“Absolutely,” Cormac replied without hesitation, his voice steady and confident.

Cormac’s offer felt like a lifeline, but it also seemed crazy. Crazy for her to accept the money, and crazy for him to offer it.

Yet, her only other option was to ask Reginald. A bitter blow after their conversation earlier. But, if she had to, she would swallow her pride and go groveling to him for a loan. But the idea made her stomach churn.

“Okay,” she breathed, feeling a strange sense of relief wash over her as she gave in to the connection that seemed to pull her toward Cormac. Chewing on her bottom lip and taking a deep breath, Sarah looked into Cormac’s eyes one last time, seeking reassurance. “If you’re really sure about loaning me the money I need, the answer is yes. Please.”

She had never expected those words to sound so right, so freeing. But now that she’d said yes, there was no time to waste. Sarah needed to act fast or the supplier wouldn’t have time to deliver the craft supplies she’d desperately needed.

“Great,” Cormac said, as he let out a sigh of relief. “And I mean it. I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life.”

She believed him, even though it sounded a little over the top. But everything about her connection to him seemed over the top. As if fate had woven their lives together in some mysterious way that defied reason.

“Okay,” she finally agreed, swallowing hard. “Thank you, Cormac. I can’t tell you how much this means to me.”

“Hey, that’s what friends are for, right?” He grinned, brushing off the significance of his gesture.
